NEHAWU KZN Statement On The Permanent Absorption Of Contract Workers At COGTA

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union [NEHAWU] in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes the permanent employment of contract workers by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs [COGTA].
The permanent employment of these contract workers follows rigorous efforts by the union which amongst others included; picket-demonstrations at the Premier’s office, submission of a memorandum to the MEC of COGTA. The permanent absorption of 119 contract workers indeed represents a victory for the union especially having waged this struggle for over a decade against an arrogant and inconsiderate department.
Their permanent status is effectively from the 1st February 2022, while the department is still finalizing 09 outstanding contract employees who are not yet absorbed. The absorption of these workers will bring about job security for them, including enjoying benefits that enjoyed by permanent employees such as Medical Aid, Pension and Bonus etc.
The leadership of the union will be seeking an audience with the Head of Department and his team to deal with the remaining 09 contract employees and all other outstanding matters that were contained in our memorandum.
Lastly, as NEHAWU, we will relentlessly continue fighting for the improvement of working conditions of our members and workers in general. We will continue to wage a relentless war to protect workers interest and their gains in all sectors we organise.
